Guangzhou Xiuwei Technology Co., Ltd. has independently developed the world's first fully enclosed three-retort tissue processor with intelligent quality control, invented under the leadership of Dr. Jun Chen. A complete product range is now available with capacities of 300, 450, 660, 900, and 1,200 tissue cassettes. Featuring multiple pioneering technologies, the system addresses the pathology industry's long-standing reliance on experience-based tissue processing and advances pathology manufacturing in China toward a new era of digitalization, standardization, and precise quality control.
For many years, pathology laboratories worldwide have commonly used single-retort mixed processing, in which large, medium, and small tissue specimens with different characteristics are processed together. This can easily lead to uneven processing, over-hardening, or incomplete dehydration, resulting in poor section quality, inconsistent H&E staining, distorted special stains, abnormal immunohistochemistry backgrounds, and deviations in molecular testing. This is a fundamental challenge affecting histology quality and diagnostic accuracy.
Xiuwei Technology pioneered independent classified processing in three retorts. In accordance with national pathology quality-control standards and standard operating practices, large, medium, and small specimens are processed separately, addressing the limitations of mixed processing at the source. The system incorporates a dual-core safety architecture, multi-level redundancy, reagent-gradient management, and backup power protection to enhance specimen safety throughout the processing cycle.
The system supports remote monitoring via mobile phone, tablet, and computer, together with intelligent alarms, visualized status viewing, and remote operation. This reduces the need for overnight on-site supervision and addresses the concern that conventional tissue processors cannot be left unattended with confidence.
Supported by a four-dimensional quality-control system and real-time online monitoring of all reagent concentrations, the instrument replaces conventional experience-based processing with standardized, data-driven control. The entire workflow becomes traceable, quantifiable, verifiable, and controllable.
For surgical specimens that cannot be resampled and long-cycle, non-repeatable specimens from large-animal model studies, the system establishes quality assurance from the start of tissue processing. It supports stable preparation of tissue from the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and other organs, creating a reliable foundation for sectioning, embedding, staining, and the wider histology workflow while reinforcing pathology's central role as the diagnostic gold standard.
The three retorts provide mutual redundancy, backup, and coordinated operation, enhancing both operational safety and quality control. The system is designed to address key challenges in paraffin histology at smaller and primary-level hospitals and to provide strong technical support for accurate pathology diagnosis and standardized oncology treatment at the local level.
Aligned with the development of medical alliances, county-level medical communities, and remote pathology consultation networks, and supported by technical guidance and standardized clinical systems from higher-level hospitals, Xiuwei's intelligent three-retort processor helps close equipment gaps in primary-level pathology laboratories. It enables local hospitals to improve histology quality and diagnostic capability, reduce the need for patients to travel for care, strengthen departmental performance and service capacity, and support the overall advancement of pathology services at the primary-care level.
1. The world's first fully enclosed, fully automated three-retort tissue processor for classified tissue processing
2. The world's first fully enclosed three-retort tissue processor with four-dimensional quality control
3. The world's first three-retort tissue processor with real-time online monitoring of all reagent concentrations
4. The world's first three-retort tissue processor compatible with dedicated reagents for both routine and rapid processing modes
5. The world's only intelligent quality-control processing system designed to classify and precisely process large, medium, and small tissue specimens
6. A complete modular product range with multiple capacities for healthcare institutions at all levels and for research applications
The modular capacity design enables one platform to meet a wide range of application needs:
· Large Grade III Class A hospitals: High-capacity models for 300-1,200 cassettes, supporting high-volume, multi-project, and high-standard pathology testing.
· Grade II Class A and county-level hospitals: Compact 100-300-cassette models suited to routine local diagnostic workloads.
· Independent laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and research institutes: Support for routine processing, rapid processing, tissue decalcification, and fully automated fixation, with an optional upgrade to an automated embedding module. Full-process data traceability and controlled specimen handling make the system suitable for drug safety assessment, toxicology studies, and animal-model research.
Xiuwei's complete range of single-, dual-, and three-retort tissue processors with intelligent quality control addresses operational safety, quality control, cost, and space constraints across pathology laboratories at different levels. It provides a core platform for improving quality, efficiency, and departmental capability in primary-level pathology services.
A conventional 300-cassette tissue processor is approximately 65 cm wide. Three units installed side by side require about 195 cm of space, while offering limited overall throughput.
The Xiuwei intelligent three-retort tissue processor is only 92 cm wide. One system provides processing capacity equivalent to three or four conventional units, handling 900-1,200 cassettes. Two systems can be installed within a two-metre-wide area, providing a combined capacity of 1,800-2,400 cassettes.
The system integrates four core functions: routine processing, rapid processing, tissue decalcification, and fully automated tissue fixation, with an optional upgrade to an automated embedding module. Compared with multiple stand-alone instruments, it can save nearly three metres of laboratory space while reducing equipment investment and operating costs and expanding processing capacity.
Malignant tumors are the second leading cause of disease-related death in China, accounting for 24.1% of deaths, while associated medical-insurance expenditure and social burden remain high. Many patients are diagnosed only at the middle or late stages, partly because of limited pathology infrastructure and inadequate early-screening capacity at the primary-care level. This results in substantial personal suffering, family burden, healthcare pressure, and loss of social resources.
Pathology diagnosis is the gold standard for cancer screening, definitive diagnosis, classification, and treatment planning, making stronger primary-level pathology infrastructure an urgent priority. Wider deployment of Xiuwei's intelligent quality-control tissue processors, together with upgraded laboratory systems, support from higher-level hospitals, remote consultation, and professional training, can systematically improve pathology capabilities across China. This supports the national objective of early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment and strengthens the primary healthcare foundation for cancer prevention and control.
This proposal is presented as a contribution from Chinese medical-device innovation to the high-quality development of pathology, the advancement of primary healthcare capacity, and the national cancer prevention and control system.
These observations are offered for discussion, and we sincerely welcome comments and guidance from experts and colleagues.
