Xiuwei Triple-Retort Intelligent Quality-Control Rapid, Fully Enclosed, Fully Automated Multifunctional Tissue Processor

The world's first triple-retort fully enclosed tissue processor developed by Xiuwei addresses a major challenge in tissue processing: the lack of digital traceability and classified processing. It offers a potential new approach to quality control in histopathology and may help advance future tissue-processing standards worldwide.

Abstract

Background: Traditional single-retort tissue processors process large, medium, and small tissue specimens together, presenting a longstanding challenge for histology laboratories. Different tissue thicknesses require different reagent penetration times. Processing mixed specimens under the same conditions can lead to uneven tissue processing, affecting paraffin sectioning, H&E staining, special staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and subsequent molecular testing.

Methods: A world-first, triple-retort, fully enclosed, fully automated tissue processor was developed, featuring three independent, isolated retorts. Each retort can run a customized program according to specimen size, enabling classified tissue processing. The product series offers capacities of 300, 450, 660, 900, and 1,200 cassettes. It incorporates real-time monitoring of reagent concentrations to establish a four-dimensional quality control system covering time, temperature, pressure, and reagent concentration. Dual-chip hardware and dual-software backup systems are integrated to safeguard specimens. Five operating modes are available in one unit: routine tissue processing, rapid processing, decalcification, fixation, and automatic embedding.

Results: Large surgical specimens and small biopsy specimens can be processed in separate retorts, helping prevent underprocessing or overprocessing. This improves consistency in tissue processing, staining, and molecular testing. The fully enclosed design reduces laboratory exposure to volatile chemicals. Flexible capacity options accommodate county-level hospitals, regional pathology centers, and tertiary hospitals.

Conclusion: This triple-retort tissue processor addresses the challenges associated with mixed-specimen processing and represents an original innovation in global tissue specimen preparation. It provides a new, reliable solution for pathology laboratories at different levels.

Core Technologies and Advantages

1. Independent Three-Retort Classified Processing to Address Uneven Tissue Processing at the Source

The system features three independent, isolated retorts, each with its own programmable settings and operation. Large, medium, and small specimens can be processed separately. Longer infiltration times can be assigned to large specimens to ensure adequate processing, while precise, shorter programs can be used for small biopsies to help prevent overprocessing. This eliminates the limitations of processing all specimens together and improves processing uniformity, section integrity, and staining quality.

2. Four-Dimensional Intelligent Quality Control for Standardized, Precise Processing

Going beyond conventional systems that primarily control time and temperature, the processor incorporates a four-dimensional quality control system covering time, temperature, pressure, and reagent concentration. It monitors reagent degradation in real time and provides timely replacement alerts, helping reduce errors associated with manual intervention and reagent deterioration. This supports standardized operation, process traceability, and quality control throughout tissue processing.

3. Dual Hardware and Software Redundancy to Protect Specimen Safety

The system incorporates dual-chip hardware and dual-software backup mechanisms. In the event of program abnormalities, power interruptions, or system restarts, these mechanisms are designed to support backup operation, data retention, and process recovery, helping reduce the risk of specimen damage and workflow interruption while safeguarding valuable clinical specimens.

4. Five Integrated Operating Modes for Comprehensive Workflow Coverage

The processor integrates five modes: routine tissue processing, rapid processing, decalcification, fixation, and automatic embedding. It supports multiple stages of specimen preparation in one system, including fixation, decalcification, tissue processing, and embedding. This accommodates both routine batch processing and urgent cases while helping reduce equipment requirements and overall costs.

5. Multiple Capacity Options and a Fully Enclosed Design for Laboratories of All Sizes

The product series offers capacities of 300, 450, 660, 900, and 1,200 cassettes to meet the throughput requirements of laboratories ranging from county-level hospitals to regional pathology centers. The fully enclosed design helps contain hazardous reagents, including formaldehyde and xylene, reducing the risk of occupational exposure.

Application Benefits

Classified tissue processing helps address quality issues associated with mixed-specimen processing, improving section integrity, staining uniformity, and consistency in immunohistochemistry and molecular testing. Intelligent quality control supports standardized workflows, while redundant backup systems help reduce specimen loss. Multiple capacity options and integrated functions meet the routine and specialized testing needs of laboratories at different levels, delivering a combination of safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Conclusion

The new triple-retort, fully enclosed tissue processor represents an original innovation in pathology specimen preparation. Its classified processing technology addresses the challenge of uneven tissue processing, while four-dimensional quality control, dual redundancy, and integrated functionality support the transition from experience-based processing to data-driven precision quality control.

By improving specimen preparation quality and supporting diagnostic reliability, the system is designed to serve healthcare institutions at different levels and offers considerable potential for clinical application and broader adoption.
